What is IELTS?
International English Language Testing System
IELTS is one of the world's most widely accepted English proficiency tests, jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English. It assesses four skills โ Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking โ and is recognized by universities, employers, professional bodies, and governments for study, work, and migration purposes.
Four Modules Tested

Types of IELTS Tests
IELTS Academic
Designed for candidates applying to study at universities and higher education institutions, or seeking professional registration in an English-speaking environment. The Reading and Writing modules reflect academic language used in lectures, textbooks, and reports.
- Best for: undergraduate & postgraduate university admissions
- Best for: professional bodies (medical, engineering, legal councils)
- Writing Task 1: describe a graph, chart, table, or diagram
IELTS General Training
Suited for candidates migrating to English-speaking countries, or applying for work experience and training programs. The test focuses on everyday English used in social and workplace contexts.
- Best for: skilled migration & work visas
- Best for: secondary education enrolment
- Writing Task 1: write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal)
IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas & Immigration)
Same content and format as Academic or General Training, but the results are recognized specifically for UK visa and immigration applications, including the Secure English Language Test (SELT) requirement set by the UK Home Office.
- Available in Academic and General Training formats
- Required for: Student visas, Skilled Worker visas, Settlement & Citizenship
- Results delivered with a UKVI-approved test report form

General Requirements to Take IELTS
